About
Arctic plants, algae, and fungi contribute significantly to the cultural and ecological systems in Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Many of these native species are edible or otherwise useful for humans and their use may promote the conservation of both the species and habitat. A survey was conducted across the Faroe Islands and Iceland to determine the extent, composition and function of uses of native species of terrestrial plants, algae and fungi in the region. The results were analyzed using quantitative ethnobotany. The proportion of all potentially usable native species being used in the study is low. However, some native species of plants are known ubiquitously. This work attempts to identify culturally significant native species of terrestrial plants, algae and fungi and to show that an increase of utilization will lead to increasing cultural significance and ultimately to conservation. Suggestions are offered for use of indices for determining current cultural significance and the promotion of sustainable management of native habitats is discussed.
